Wayside Train Monitoring System

Every time a train passes, it's a decision

Rolling stock and infrastructure require increasingly rapid decisions and the necessary data to support them. railTRAQ provides this data through reliable measurement results.

The measurement method is unique worldwide and patented.

Patented Measurement Method

The rail becomes a sensor

railTRAQ is a track measurement point that uses a digital twin to derive the complete force triplet Fz·Fy·Fx from the wheel-rail contact, as well as the actual wheel contact point and the vehicle speed.

The core component of this Digital Twin-based Wheel-Rail Monitoring System is the sensor foil attached to the rail web. It records how the rail deforms under each passing wheel - during live operation, at speeds ranging from 5 to over 350 km/h - and can be installed in two to three hours without affecting the track infrastructure. The measurement data provides a reliable basis for safety, maintenance, and planning. A fully-fledged wayside train monitoring system at a single measurement point, used for applications such as predictive maintenance and weigh-in-motion.

What railTRAQ Offers

Each pass provides a complete picture: wheel load, axle load, and car weight across the entire train. This not only serves as a check for overloading but also detects uneven loading based on the distribution between the left and right sides. The risk of derailment is identified based on the ratio of lateral to vertical force. A microphone array acoustically detects flat spots, and RFID technology is used to assign each measurement first to the car and then to the individual wheel. Not only can short-term events be recorded, but wear trends can also be identified and evaluated over longer periods, serving as the basis for predictive maintenance of the rolling stock and track structure.

Data is analyzed directly at the measurement point and reports are generated automatically by ACQUA, Engenium’s analysis software. The data is transmitted to the operator via cellular network or LAN.

Basis

The Digital Twin

The digital twin forms the basis of railTRAQ. It is a complex model of the actual measurement site consisting of information on the rail, fastenings, underlayment, and track structure, which is individually adapted to each rail type.

Installed in under 3 hours

Setup & Installation

The measuring device is affixed to the existing track - without replacing rails, without drilling, without cutting and without disturbing the ballast bed or ties. The sensor-foil and digital twin are adapted to the respective track structure, from wooden or concrete ties to slab track and have been tested for rail types 46 through 60. All that is required is the track data  - rail cross-section, cushioning layer, sleeper type, and sleeper spacing - as well as a power supply (photovoltaic or fuel cell options are also available). Once installed and calibrated, the measuring point is immediately ready for use and essentially maintenance-free.
