FE calculation of a rubber band for passenger coaches

Engenium was tasked with performing an FE calculation for an increased load spectrum to evaluate the strength of a rubber band used in passenger coaches.

Solution approach:

First, the material model was fitted to the measured axial characteristic. The optimization of the material model was based on a third-order-deformation-model (TOD-model). One of our optimization tools was used for this.

The actual calculation was performed in the overall system, in which two rubber bands are axially prestressed and then act as a spring system connected in parallel under load. The calculation was performed for different force levels and by superimposing gimbal angles according to our customer's specification.

Results:

Complex load case situations could thus be evaluated on the basis of numerical calculation methods and thus the application could be secured. This saved our customer time-consuming and comparatively cost-intensive test bench trials.
